Iwan Lamby’s father was an illegitimate son of Russian Tsar Alexander II (1818-81). Iwan graduated from school in 1906 and completed his studies as a dentist in 1910. He then went to the United States and earned his doctorate from the Northwestern University in Chicago one year later. In 1912 he opened a dental surgery in Stockholm. A donation by Lamby in 1965 helped to establish a fund for the Promotion of Scientific Education and Research in Dentistry.
Lamby had two sons with his wife Astrid Maria (née Trana). In later life, they lived in Brazil for some time. He was a car lover and owned several representative cars including a Lancia in the 1930s. He became an active member of Stockholm’s Lancia Club.
Iwan Lamby was a crew member of the Erna Signe which placed second in both races behind the Norwegian Magda XI in the 12 metres class at the 1912 Olympics. Accordingly, the crew was awarded the silver medal. He himself owned sailing boats preferably naming them Senta and was involved in boat construction. Lamby competed successfully in regattas until after World War II.
