Wilfrid Leuchars was the son of John Walter Leuchars, one of the men responsible for developing Burnham as one of the leading yachting centres in Britain. Wilfrid, like his father, also became an excellent yachtsman, and finished fourth aboard his father’s boat Sibindi in the 6-metre race at the 1908 Olympics, around the Isle of Wight. Wilfrid regularly raced his father’s yachts and was a very proficient helmsman. A timber merchant, Wilfrid Leuchars was a member of the Royal Burnham and Royal Corinthian Clubs, and for many years was the Commodore of the Burnham Regatta. At the 1924 International Conference of the Yacht Racing Association he was elected a member.
