Salusbury Mellor was well known in various circles on the Isle of Wight. A member of the Bembridge Sailing Club, his cutter Nan won many local regattas, and it was Nan who he took to the 1900 Paris Olympics, and finished fifth in the 10-20 ton class.
Mellor was a keen, and competitive, member of the Isle of Wight Gun Club and won many prizes, including the King of Spain Cup. Both Mellor and his wife Daisy were also very good golfers. He died of an acute appendicitis in 1917 and, at the time, was the sub-commissioner for the Isle of Wight, appointed by the Agricultural Commissioner. Mellor’s son Harry was a wing-commander in the RAF and lost his life when he went missing over the North Sea in 1940, during World War II.
