Hailing from the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, it was perhaps inevitable Jaime Monjo would take to sailing. Although born in Mallorca, he spent his later working life as a notary in Barcelona and it was both there, and in the Bay of Palma, that he enjoyed some of his finest sailing successes. The Spanish Soling champion three years in succession, 1986-88, he then represented Spain at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the Soling class with Antonio Gorostegui, Domingo Manrique and fellow Mallorquin, José Manuel Valades. Monjo won a fourth Spanish title in 1992 when he won the Tornado class. His last major victory was in the prestigious Copa del Rey at Palma, in his native Mallorca, in August 2018, when he was part of the Estrella Damm crew. The following month Monjo was the Spanish National Classic Champion, but just over two months later he was dead. Just as he had done every Friday, he went out on his catamaran from the Barcelona International Sailing Centre on Friday 16 November 2018, but the boat was spotted having ran aground close to a jetty with Monjo collapsed on the boat’s trampoline. He died doing what he loved best.
