Biography

The height of Alfons Olszewski’s sailing career came at the 1936 Summer Olympics, where he competed in the 6-metre class alongside Janusz Zalewski, Juliusz Sieradzki, Józef Szajba, and Stanisław Zalewski and finished 11th among 12 nations. He was imprisoned by the Germans at the onset of World War II but, unlike several of his teammates, survived the conflict. Prior to the war he had worked in various capacities at several maritime organizations and afterwards he used his experience to help rebuild some of the sailing clubs during the 1940s and 1950s.
