William Plant was born in Jamaica but moved to the US in 1961 to earn a business degree at Marquette University. He returned to Jamaica in 1970 and married but he and his wife returned to the US in 1977, living in Houston, Texas. He competed at the 1968 Olympic Games in the Flying Dutchman class, sailing alongside Michael Anthony Nunes. Plant continued to sail in Houston as a member of the Houston Yacht Club. He formed his own company, Building Products Plus, of which he served as the chairman. The company was a manufacturer and supplier of extended life building materials and industrial/commercial products to marine, industrial and commercial builders and manufacturers, and large farm and ranch operations.
