Howard Plumb, who learnt to windsurf off the Hampshire coast, narrowly beat 1992 Olympian Barrie Edgington for a place at the Atlanta Olympics. A national champion who also competed at European and World Championships, Plumb performed below expectations at the Games and could only place 24th of the 46th participants in his class. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Portsmouth University in 1994 and worked in the biotechnology industry until his death in 2014. Plumb, a keen amateur cyclist, died of injuries sustained when hit by a car.
