Both Tamás Pomucz’s father and mother competed in sailing, so it was no surprise that he also chose the sport at age eight. In the beginning he competed in the 470 class, then from 1981 in Flying Dutchman, in which he later achieved his greatest success. He was a multiple Hungarian champion and in 1989 became European Champion on Lake Balaton alongside Béla Argay. Three years later at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics Pomucz competed with Tamás Somogyi. After the Olympics, Pomucz finished his career as a sailor and between 1993 and 2000 was the head coach of the Hungarian sailing team, leading them at the Atlanta Olympics. He could not participate at the Sydney Olympics for health reasons.
After secondary school, Pomucz trained in water and gas mechanics, working in that profession. He later graduated from the College of Physical Education as a professional coach. He and his brother founded the Pomucz Sailing School in 1987 and then ran a sailing shop.
