Axel Preben-Schmidt was a Brazilian sailor who competed at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. In 1968 he sailed in the Star class alongside his twin brother Erik Preben-Schmidt, while in 1972 he competed in the Soling class.
Axel Preben-Schmidt won a Lightning class gold medal at the 1959 Pan American Games and a silver at the 1963 Pan Ams, both times sailing with Erik. The two were known as the “sea twins” and won three consecutive Snipe class World Championships in 1961, 1963, and 1965.
The two brothers were the start of a brilliant Olympic sailing family. They were uncles to Torben and Lars Grael, and granduncles to Martine and Marco Grael .
