Carl Ryves began his love of sailing at a young age after his father built him boat while he was growing up in Sydney. Not only did Ryves compete as a sailor, he constructed his own boats and built his own sails. At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics he competed in the Flying Dutchman with Dick Sargeant. The Australian pair just missed out on a medal after finishing in fourth place. Later the same year Ryves was named as the Yachtsman of the Year by Australian Sailing.
