Nikolai Vekšin was introduced to yachting in 1911 while studying in Sankt Petersburg Polytechnical University and as a talented yachtsman he was selected to the Russian 1912 Olympic team already as an alternate. The peak of his very long yachtsman career was probably at the 1928 Summer Olympics, where he captained the Estonian Yacht “Tutti V” to a bronze medal in 6 m class. He was still a world-class yachtsman in 1945, when aged 58 he won a silver in Soviet championships in L45 class and earned a title Master Athlete of Soviet Union.
From 1925-1940 Vekšin worked as an engineer in Põhja Paberi- ja Puupapivabrikute AS (Northen Paper- and Carton Factory) and was a board member of Estonian Sea Yacht Club. Nikolai Vekšin was arrested by NKVD (Soviet secret police) in 1949, because he had been an officer of Yudenich Army (part of the White Army under command of Nikolay Yudenich) and was sent to a prison-camp in Norilsk, Siberia, where he died shortly afterwards.
