Kevin Wilson grew up in Brighton, Victoria, one of two children born Austrian rules footballer Robert Hope Wilson (1898–1986), who played in the Victorian Football League for Carlton from 1923 to 1925. A member of the local Royal Brighton Yacht Club, Wilson was selected alongside clubmate Bart Harvey to represent Australia in the Star class at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, eventually placing 18th. He was an electrical engineer by profession, and was a lifelong resident of Brighton.
