Thomas Clifford Beswick was born in West Bromwich, England, before moving to Argentina, with him changing the spelling of his first name to Tomás. Beswick was a talented sprinter who was selected to represent Argentina at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He was part of the quartet that just missed out on a medal in the 4 × 100 metres relay when they finished fourth. He also ran in the 100 and 200 metres in Berlin, reaching the quarter-finals of the latter. In 1937 Beswick won gold in the 4 x 100 metres relay at the South American Championships in Athletics in São Paulo, Brazil.
