Biography

In 1916 Edwin Carr tried to enlist in the Australian Army but was under the legal age to join. One year later Carr was eventually successful in joining the Army and served in the 2nd Australian Machine Gun Squadron in Egypt before returning home in early 1919. He was a keen rugby union player and represented the New South Wales Waratahs in four matches in 1921. The first three were against the Springboks in Sydney before the team toured New Zealand to face the All Blacks. In 1986 Australia Rugby Union retrospectively gave Test Match status to the fixtures, with Carr therefore earning four international caps.

In his rugby career Carr played on the wing and was noted for his speed. This transferred to the athletics track with him becoming the Australian champion in the 100 and 220 yards in 1922. Two years later he ran in the 100 and 200 metres at the 1924 Paris Olympics, reaching the semi-finals in both races. Carr was also selected as the flagbearer for Australia at the Opening Ceremony. His son was also a noted sprinter who competed at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

Personal Bests: 100 – 10.6 (1923); 200 – 21.7ye (1924).
