One of Australia’s top long distance runners of the 1970s, Dave Fitzsimons won eight Australian titles in the 5000 and 10000 m, including doubles 1977, 1978 and 1979. He competed in several major international events, placing 6th in the 5000 m final at the 1974 Commonwealth Games, taking 3rd in the 5k at the 1977 World Cup, and qualifying for the 1976 Olympic final in the 10000 m. He died of lymphoma at age 58.
