John Vernon finished seventh in the 1950 British Empire Games high jump. In the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games high jump he finished sixth.John Vernon was a high jumper who competed at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, going out in the qualifying round. He also competed at the 1950 and 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, placing seventh and sixth, respectively. He was a three-time Australian high jump champion, winning outdoors in 1953-54.
Vernon was a founding member, past-President, and life member of the Ballarat Sportsman’s Club. The club’s track stadium had a new all-weather track installed which was named in his honor, The John Vernon Field.
