Horst Mandl

Horst Mandl competed in the decathlon at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, although he failed to finish the event. Mandl competed at the 1966 and 1969 European Championships, finishing 17th and 6th, respectively. Mandl was Austrian champion in the 110 metres hurdles in 1967-69, the high jump in 1970 and 1973, the long jump in 1962 and 1964-1966, the triple jump in 1964-1972, and the decathlon in 1963-1965 and 1969-1971. He set five Austrian decathlon records between 1965-69.

Mandl later became a successful coach and also continued competing in masters’ events, winning several World Masters’ titles – three in M40 in 1977 and two in M50 in 1987. He also set world masters high jump records for M40 at 2.02 in 1976, M60 with 1.76 in 1996, and M65 1.62 in 2001. His wife Doris was Austrian champion at 100 metre hurdles in 1977 and their son Jürgen was a decathlete with a best of 7,646 in 1986.
