Athlete Helmut Schmuck won 22 Austrian titles in 10,000 metres (1990, 1995), 25 km road running (1988-90), half marathon (1993), marathon (1990), cross country-short course (1990), cross country-long course (1995-96, 1999), and hill running (1988, 1991, 1993-96, 1998-2000, 2003-04). At the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics Schmuck finished 47th in the marathon.
Schmuck won the World Hill Running Championships in 1992 and 1994 and the European Championships in 1995 and 1997, as well as a silver medal in 2003. At the Wien (Vienna) marathon he finished second in 1988 and third in 1990.
By profession, Schmuck served as a group inspector at the Knittelfeld police station in Styria. The police granted him the necessary time off for training courses and international championships.
