Peter Sternad was an eight-time Austrian champion in the hammer throw, winning the title from 1972 to 1976 and from 1978 to 1980. At the 1972 München Olympics Sternad qualified for the final of the competition where he finished in 17th place. Two years later he competed at the European Athletics Championships in Roma, but did not advance from the qualification round. Sternad returned to the Olympics for the 1976 Montréal Games but again did not advance from the qualification group. In 1982 Sternad was one of the founders of the LC Villach Athletics Club.
