In 1979 Anne Michel became the Belgian champion in both the 400 metres and the 400 metres hurdles, in addition to setting a national record in the 400 metres with 52.18 seconds. Michel’s record stood until the following year when Rosine Wallez ran 52 seconds dead in the heats of the 400 metres at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. Michel, Wallez, Lea Alaerts, and Regina Berg ran in the 4 × 400 metres relay at the Moskva Games with the Belgian quartet finishing in seventh place. In the relay heats they ran 3:30.70 to set a Belgian record that would stand for 38 years. In 1982 Michel was awarded with the Golden Spike, the highest athletics prize in Belgium.
