István Liptay began playing basketball in his hometown with Szeged Lokomotiv and later Szeged Postás. In 1950, he moved to Csepel SC, where he played until the end of his career, except for three seasons, when he played for Oroszlányi Bányász. With Csepel, he finished third four times and second once at the Hungarian Championships.
Between 1956 and 1963 Liptay appeared 54 times for the Hungarian national team. In 1960, he was a member of the Hungarian national team that finished ninth at the Roma Olympics. At the European Championships he finished fourth in 1957 and 1963 and sixth in 1961.
After finishing his sports career Liptay worked as a coach, working with the women’s team of Csepel SC until 1981, and the men’s team between 1987 and 1989. With the latter, he won the Hungarian championship in 1989 and Liptay was also elected Coach of the Year (1989).
