Belgian long-distance runner Jean Simonet represented Union Saint-Gilloise where he specialised in the marathon. At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics Simonet finished in 23rd place, just over 12 minutes behind Emil Zátopek’s winning time. A year after the Olympics, Simonet became the Belgian marathon champion, winning the title on the out-and-back course from Heysel to Boitsfort.
