Biography

Belgian sportsman Émile Vercken was a talented track and field athlete and field hockey player. In athletics Vercken specialised as a sprinter, with him winning gold in the 400 metres at the 1926 Belgian championships, along with bronze in the 200 metres. At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics he was part of the Belgian quartet that ran in the 4 x 400 metres relay but the team was eliminated in the opening heat. He was also scheduled to run in the 400 metres and the 4 x 100 metres relay in Amsterdam but did not start in either race. He did compete, however, in the hockey tournament at the 1928 Games, with Belgium just missing out on a medal after finishing fourth. Following his playing career Vercken later became an international hockey referee.

Personal Best: 400 – 50.2 (1926).
