Phyllis Edness was the daughter of Joseph and Myrtle Edness of Pembroke, Bermuda and attended Sandy’s Secondary School in Somerset, Bermuda. She was the first black Bermudian woman to compete for Bermuda at the Olympics; and one of the first two women to compete along with fellow sprinter Phyllis Lightbourn at the 1948 Olympics in London. Here, she competed in the 100m and 200m sprint events. After the Olympics, Edness attended Central State College in Wilberforce, Ohio and obtained a degree in physical education in 1956. She married Jackson Holland in New York City that same year.
