Biography

Thelma Jones was still receiving her education when she demonstrated considerable skill in track and field at Bermuda’s trials for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. She was selected to represent her country and then became the first Bermudan Olympian to reach an Olympic event final when she placed 22nd overall in the long jump. This feat earned her the title of Bermudan Athlete of the Year, the first woman to be so distinguished. She was also eliminated in the first round of the 100 metres at the Games. Her only other major international appearance came at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, where she finished ninth in the long jump and was eliminated in the heats of the 100 yards.

Personal Bests: 100 – 12.75 (1952); LJ – 5.55 (1952).
