Valentin Dzhonev was a javelin thrower who on 18 May 1974 became the first Bulgarian to surpass 80 metrres, when he threw 81.50. He later set two further Bulgarian records, leaving the mark at 84.00 metres. Dzhonev was Bulgarian Champion in 1974, 1976, 1978, and 1980, and was Balkan Champion in 1975 and 1977. In 1977 he won a bronze medal at the Universiade. Dzhonev competed for Levski-Spartak.
