Ivaylo Sharankov ran the marathon at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, finishing 30th. He was a five-time Bulgarian marathon champion, winning in 1965-67, 1969, and 1972. He competed at the Bulgarian nationals through 1976, at almost 43 years of age. Sharankov won the Balkan Marathon Championship in 1965 and 1967. His best time of 2-21:21.2 came at the Meerbeek-Reinkamp Marathon on 10 June 1967.
