Antón Barticevic was born Punta Arenas, Chile in 1906 to Croatian parents who came from the town of Supetar on the island of Brač. From a young age Barticevic played sports, first as a football player before competing in the hammer throw in 1926. For the best part of next ten years he competed in multiple championships in the hammer across South America, including ones held in Peru (1929), Argentina (1931), and Uruguay (1933). His performances earned him a place on the Chilean Olympic team for the 1936 Berlin Games where he finished 17th.
