During the 1910s and 1920s there was no better long-distance runner in Chile than Juan Jorquera. At the 1918 South American Championships Jorquera won the marathon in a record time, although the course was later found to measure slightly shorter than the standard distance of 42.195km. He also won the mile race at the same championships. At the 1920 edition he did the double with victory in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres, setting a championship record in both races. Jorquera ran in the marathon at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics where he finished in a disappointing 33rd place out of the 35 athletes that completed the course.
