Biography

Eduardo Fontecilla was a Chilean distance runner who competed at international events from the mid-to-late 1950s. In 1955 Fontecilla ran in the 1,500 metres at the Pan American Games in Mexico City, reaching the final. The following year he finished fifth in both the 800 and 1,500 metres at the South American Championships in Santiago, earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the Games he again ran in the 800 and 1,500 metres, along with the 3,000 metres steeplechase and the marathon. Fontecilla had his best result in 1957, winning silver in the 1,500 metres at the South American Championships in Santiago. He competed at his third South American Championships one year later, finishing fifth in the 1,500 metres and sixth in the 800 metres.
