Alejandro “Alex” Hannig Ulriksen was born in Chile in 1897 but emigrated to Germany with his family while he was still young. During the 1910s Hannig lived through World War I, later enlisting in the army of the German Empire. By the early the 1920s he had returned to Chile, becoming one of the leading athletes in the country. At the 1926 South American Championships in Athletics Hannig won bronze as part of the Chilean quartet in the 4 × 100 metres relay. The following year when the championships were held in Santiago he won bronze in the 100 and 200 metres. Hannig ran in the same two races at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics but did not advance from the heats in either of them.
