Biography

Campo Elías Gutiérrez was a Colombian all-round track and field athlete. Gutiérrez ran in the 100 metres at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but did not advance from the heats. He also competed in the javelin at the Berlin Games, finishing 28th with a best throw of 35.00 metres. Two years later he won bronze in the discus throw at the 1938 Bolivarian Games in Bogotá. The stadium Estadio De Atletismo Campo Elías Gutiérrez in the north of Colombia was named after him. His son Francisco ran in the 100 and 200 metres at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Another son, Jackie, played Major League Baseball for the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and Philadelphia Phillies between 1983 and 1988.
