Roberto Moya

Roberto Moya’s discus career was launched as a 19-year-old when he threw 49.10 in a competition at Santiago de Cuba in 1984. He won his first major title two years later when he won gold at the 1986 Ibero-American Championships at La Habana. Moya won the Central American and Caribbean Championships gold medal three times, in 1987, 1989-90, and the Pan American Games title in 1995. He also won silver in the 1991 Pan Ams and 1992 World Cup, both in La Habana, and on each occasion he was beaten by America’s Tony Washington. Moya added to his medal collection with bronzes at the 1989 Universiade and 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Despite competing in three World Championships between 1991-95, his best finish was eighth in the first of those years. Moya retired in 1998 and took up coaching. He later moved to Spain and worked as a taxi driver in Granada for a while before moving to Valencia where he resumed his coaching career. He died in the Spanish city.
