A four-time Olympian, Ivan Pedroso was the world’s leading long jumper in the post-Carl Lewis era. Pedroso won 14 international gold medals, including four consecutive victories at the World Championships, in 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2001. He also won five consecutive titles at the World Indoor Championships, from 1993-2001. Pedroso was ranked in the world top 10 11 times by Track & Field News, including ranking #1 six times – in 1995 and 1997-2001. His other international titles were the 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games, the Pan American Games in 1995, 1999, and 2003, and the 1997 Universide.
Pedroso’s best legal mark was 8.71, done in 1995. Also that year, however, at Sestriere, Italy, Pedroso jumped 8.96 metres (29-4¾), which seemed to have broken Mike Powell’s world record. The officials ruled that the wind gauge was obstructed while he was jumping, however, so the mark was never ratified as a record.
Personal Best: LJ – 8.71 (1995).
