In the interwar period Fernando Labourdette-Liaresq was both a Spanish and Basque champion in track and field athletics. Labourdette-Liaresq became the Spanish champion in the 400 metres in 1924 and 1929, in addition to being the long jump champion in 1928. In the 400 metres he broke the Basque record on three occasions, twice in 1929 and once in 1930. His time of 50.0 seconds was both a Spanish and Basque record, with the mark standing in the latter category until 1958. Labourdette-Liaresq was scheduled to run in the 400 metres and the 4 × 400 metres relay at the 1924 Paris Olympics but did not start in either race. Four years later he did compete in the long jump at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics where he finished in last place in the qualifying round.
