Biography

Basque track and field athlete Gabino Lizarza competed in throwing events and specialised in the discus and javelin. In May 1924 Lizarza threw the discus 41.44 metres at a tournament in Tolosa, setting a Spanish record that stood for 12 years. Later that month he won another title in the discus, which gained him a place on the Spanish team for the 1924 Paris Olympics. His throw at the Paris Games was disappointing, with him finishing in 28th place with 34.200 metres. Lizarza died in July 1938 after a bout of pneumonia. He was 49.
