Biography

Although he began his sporting career as a boxer, Miguel Navarro rose to prominence in Spain’s marathon scene during the 1950s and won the national title five times (1957-1959, 1961, and 1964). During that era, he set five Spanish records in the event, the last occurring during his participation at the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he placed 17th. He had had more success a year previous when he had won silver in the marathon behind Morocco’s Bakir Ben Aissa at the 1959 Mediterranean Games. He was also 20th in the marathon at the 1958 European Championships and did not finish the race in 1962. Following his retirement from active competition in 1965, he worked as a concierge at the Residencia Blume de Barcelona.
