Biography

Estonian track and field athlete Aksel Kuuse began competing in the high jump in 1928. In the following decade Kuuse won four national titles in the event (1933, 1935–37), along with two silver medals (1934, 1939). He improved the Estonian record on five occasions, in addition to winning multiple medals at various student games across Europe. He finished tenth at the 1936 Berlin Olympics with a best clearance of 1.90 metres. Kuuse worked at the national bank from 1937 before being mobilised into the Red Army in 1941. He spent seven months in a Soviet prison camp where he died in April 1942.
