Hirofumi Numata was the first Japanese basketball player taller than 2 metres (6-7). After graduating from Doshisha University Numata joined the Matsushita Electric team and won seven Japanese league titles with the club. In 1971 he won the Asian Basketball Confederation Championship with the national team and was selected to represent Japan at the 1972 München Olympics. For the 1975-76 season Numata was named as the rookie of the year in the Japan Basketball League, which was followed by his second Olympic appearance when he competed at the 1976 Montréal Games.
