Biography

Arvo Askola was a Finnish long-distance runner who represented Kymintehtaan Urheiluseura sports club. Askola first came to prominence in 1934 when he won silver in the 10,000 metres at the European Athletics Championships, finishing less than a second behind compatriot Ilmari Salminen. Two years later he would finish second once again to Salminen in the same race, this time at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Volmari Iso-Hollo won the bronze medal in Berlin to complete a podium clean-sweep for Finland in the 10,000 metres. Askola also became the Finnish champion in the 8km cross-country race in 1936.
