Biography

In addition to serving as a major in the Finnish Defense Forces reserves Erkki Hautamäki was a military historian who researched Finland’s involvement in World War II. In the 1960s Hautamäki worked in a special position in the Finnish General Staff before becoming the principal of the Vuokatti Sports Academy from 1970 to 1990. In 2005 his book Finland in the Eye of a Storm was published, which contained a detailed analysis of both pre-and-post Winter War Soviet invasion plans.

Hautamäki was also an all-round track and field athlete who competed in the decathlon. At the Finnish championships he won bronze in 1951 and silver in 1952. He competed in the event at his home Olympics in Helsinki in 1952 but did not finish after not taking the start line for the 1,500 metres.
