Jani Lehtonen was Finland’s best pole vaulter. When he died aged only 40, he still held the Finnish records with 5.82 m (outdoor) and 5.83 (indoor). Winner of four national titles in the event, Lehtonen never reached the final of a major outdoor tournament, always being eliminated in the qualification. In 1993, he did reach the final of the World Indoor Championships, finishing fifth, after having placed eighth at the European Indoor Championships a year earlier. By 1996, Lehtonen had retired from competition, and began coaching other vaulters.
