Born in the US state of Wyoming in 1897 Jaakko Luoma moved to Finland with his family following the sudden death of his father in a mining disaster in 1903. Luoma was a track and field athlete who ran in the 1,500 metres at the 1924 Paris Olympics, finishing in 12th place. He was also scheduled to run in the 800 metres in Paris but did not start the race. Luoma later became a solider who fought in the Winter War during World War II. He was killed in action on the penultimate day of conflict while the Moscow Peace Treaty was being signed, with a cease-fire coming into effect the following day.
