Biography

During the late 1930s and 1940s Finland’s Väinö Muinonen won several titles in the marathon. Muinonen was selected to compete in the race at the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he finished fifth. He won his first national title in the event in 1937 and went on to become the European champion the following year in Paris. He continued to have good form at the Finnish championships, winning another title in 1940 and silver in 1946. Muinonen also won silver in the marathon at the 1946 European Athletics Championships in Oslo.
