Biography

Finland’s Toimi Tulikoura was a champion track and field athlete who later became a lawyer and a sports director. Tulikoura represented Finland at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics where he competed in both the long jump and the triple jump, finishing fifth in the latter. With him focusing on the triple jump, he became the Finnish champion in the event in 1929.

By the early 1930s Tulikoura had graduated with a law degree and was working in the Finnish judiciary service. He started out as a parish registrar before moving up to work as the county secretary of the local county government. From the 1950s until the 1970s Tulikoura worked in the court of appeal in Eastern Finland. Alongside his career in law he also worked in sports management with the Finnish Sports Federation before serving on the boards of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the Finnish Olympic Committee. Tulikoura was the athletics director of the Finnish team at the 1960 Roma Olympics and the general manager of Finland’s Olympic team for the 1964 Tokyo Games.
