Jacky Boxberger was a successful distance runner in events ranging from 1500 m to the marathon. He won French titles in the 1500 m, 5000 m, 10000 m and the cross, and set national records in the 5000 m and marathon. He also enjoyed some international success, winning the European indoor title over 1500 m in 1972, and the Paris Marathon on two occasions. He was tragically trampled by an elephant while trying to photograph the animal on a safari with his wife and daughter.
