French-Algerian track and field athlete Ali Brakchi specialised in sprinting and the long jump. Brakchi won two gold medals at the 1959 Mediterranean Games in Beirut with first place in the long jump and the 4 × 100 metres relay. That same year he won two bronze medals in the same two events at the Summer Universiade in Torino. The following summer he competed in the long jump at the 1960 Roma Olympics but finished in a disappointing 26th place after failing to make it to the final.
Brakchi was the French long jump champion in 1957, 1960, 1962, and 1966. Between 1963 and 1965 he represented Algeria, where he won gold in the long jump at the 1963 GANEFO in Indonesia, a multi-international sports event set up to try and counter the Olympics. In the same year Brakchi was the Algerian champion in the long jump, 100 metres, high jump, triple jump, and shot put.
