Péter Papp started playing basketball in 1946 as a high school student, and in 1947 he joined the MÁVAG basketball team, where he won the Hungarian championship title the following season.
Papp played 38 times for the Hungarian national team. He participated in the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. A year later he won silver at the European Championship in Moskva, and two years later in Budapest, he was the member of the team that won gold. In 1954, also in Budapest, he won the World College Championship.
His early death occurred under tragic circumstances, just when a happy event occurred in his family life: a few days after his child was born, Papp rushed to training and was hit by a car on the way. In his memory his old affiliation organizes an international basketball tournament every year.
