Biography

Charles Lagarde was born in Pau as the son of a civil engineer. He represented France at two Olympic Games, in 1908 and 1912, in shot put and discus throw. Although was entered he did not compete in pole vault and javelin throw. At the French Championships in 1909, 1910 and 1911 he won three bronze medals in shot put and discus throw. After a first term of military service in 1899 he was drafted again in 1914 to serve in World War I. For his actions, Lagarde was awarded the Croix de Guerre. In the 1920s he had three top six placings in the hammer throw at French Championships. In 1928, at the age of 50, he was even entered for Olympic Games for a third time, this time in the hammer throw, but he did not compete.

A sports journalist for the newspaper L’Indépendant des Basses-Pyrénées, Lagarde was president of the sports club Section Paloise. He was also president of the regional sports association Basque-Béarn-Bigorre. A street was named after him in his hometown Pau.
