Biography
The shot and discus career of Margaret Lucas was fairly short. She rose to prominence in 1947, when she was runner-up to Bevis Reid, making her first competitive athletic appearance for seven years, in the discus at the WAAA Championship. The following year, Lucas was the champion, and also runner-up in the shot. She was selected to represent Britain in both events at the London Olympics. She married Harry Birtwistle, the month before the start of the Games, and competed under her married name. She set a British discus record of 35.756 m. in 1947 and at the time of the Olympics, had increased it to 38.774 m.
